When The Witcher first premiered on Netflix in 2019, critics and audiences were calling it the next Game of Thrones, a prestige fantasy epic with a charismatic lead and a rich mythological world to explore. But as the series went on, the writing went off the rails, and Geralt (Henry Cavill) was gradually pushed to the sidelines of his own show. Cavill eventually walked away from the role, and with him went most of the goodwill. Now, judging by the numbers, it seems like those Witcher fans have found a better fantasy series worth their attention.

There may be another factor at play as well. The timing also lines up with the recent release of Masters of the Universe, which brings the world of He-Man and Eternia to the big screen. Nostalgia has a way of snowballing, and once one beloved franchise returns, audiences often start looking back at everything else they grew up with.

That nostalgia trail has led directly to Xena: Warrior Princess. According to FlixPatrol, the series is currently sitting at #2 on the Apple TV Store chart in both the United States and Canada. This is even more impressive because that chart tracks digital rentals and purchases, not regular subscription streaming, which means viewers are actively paying to watch the show.

Your answers point to the iconic universe your values, your instincts, and your particular way of seeing the world were built for. This is where you would find your people — and your purpose.

You believe in the cause — in the idea that freedom is worth fighting for even when the odds are impossible and the empire is vast.

You understand, in the deepest part of yourself, that the journey matters as much as the destination — and that the world's beauty is worth protecting even at great cost.

You believe that love, loyalty, and doing what's right are not naive sentiments — they are the most powerful forces in any world, magical or otherwise.

You see the world clearly — its power structures, its hypocrisies, its brutal arithmetic — and you are not paralysed by that clarity. You use it.

You believe the future is worth building — that curiosity, cooperation, and the expansion of understanding are not just ideals but the most practical path forward for any civilisation.

Before Loki (Tom Hiddleston) or Peacemaker (John Cena) got their own series, there was Xena (Lucy Lawless). The character was first introduced as a villain in a three-episode arc on Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, and the response was so impressive that the spin-off was greenlit before those episodes had even finished airing. The series follows Xena as a powerful warrior princess who dedicates herself to protecting the vulnerable as a form of atonement for her past as a feared warlord. She is accompanied by a bard named Gabrielle (Renée O'Connor), and together, they take on warlords, gods, and corrupt rulers across the world. Thus, the Witcher comparisons.

The series went on for six seasons and managed to strike a perfect balance between Looney Tunes-esque goofy episodes and dark, psychologically brutal, dramatic ones. The show is definitely campy, but it’s that nostalgic '90s camp that's really adorable. On top of that, there were even several crossover episodes with the Hercules series, which made it feel much more expansive and ambitious than most TV shows of the time.

Xena: Warrior Princess is available to rent or purchase on the Apple TV Store. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
