House Of The Dragon has returned for its third season, but is the Game Of Thrones prequel getting a fourth run? Find out below.

The HBO fantasy drama, based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, is set around 200 years before the events of Game Of Thrones and follows the bloody Targaryen civil war known as the Dance Of The Dragons.

Season three premiered in the US on HBO on Sunday (June 21), with the opening episode arriving in the UK the following day on HBO Max, Sky Atlantic and NOW TV. The new run will consist of eight episodes, airing weekly through to the finale on August 9.

The series was co-created by Ryan Condal alongside Martin, and the cast includes Emma D’Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen, Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower, Matt Smith as Daemon Targaryen and Tom Glynn-Carney as Aegon II Targaryen.

The third season picks up after the fallout from season two’s cliffhanger ending, as the conflict between Rhaenyra Targaryen and Aegon II moves deeper into all-out war.

Is House Of The Dragon getting a season four?

Yes. HBO has already renewed ‘House Of The Dragon’ for a fourth season, with the next run currently expected to arrive in 2028.

The renewal was confirmed in November 2025, when HBO announced that both House Of The Dragon and fellow Thrones spin-off A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms would continue.

HBO did not initially describe the fourth season as the final run when the renewal was announced, but Condal has previously said that he envisioned the series lasting four seasons in total.

In January, he said writing for season four was under way, but said it would be “the last one”, adding there was “only one more left to go”, in reference to the physical and mental endurance that the show demands of him.

That would track with the show’s central story, which is not designed to cover the whole Targaryen dynasty, but the specific period of civil war dramatised in Martin’s source material.

A two-year wait would also fit the series’ recent pattern. Season one aired in 2022, season two followed in 2024, season three arrived in 2026, and season four is now lined up for 2028.
