Since its launch back in 2017, Hollow Knight has cemented itself as one of the greatest of all time. Developed by indie studio Team Cherry, the Metroidvania saw players take on the role of a nameless insectoid character who must explore and battle enemies in the fallen kingdom known as the Hallownest.

Featuring fellow insectoid enemies, as well as punishing bosses, Hollow Knight was met with critical acclaim and received praise for its music, art style, atmosphere, combat, and level of difficulty. It is hard to believe that it began its life as a crowdfunding campaign and now Hollow Knight and its 2025 sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong, are regarded to be some of the greatest video games of all time.

With no news on what the future holds for the Hollow Knight franchise, and with there being quite a gap between the launch of the first game and its sequel, fans are eager to dive back into the magical Metroidvania world, and now, there is the perfect way to do so.

Welcome The Unofficial Hollow Knight RPG, an original tabletop role-playing system inspired by the hit Team Cherry title. Players will take on the role of various forms of daring bugs who must set off on adventures in the strange and wondrous world of Hollow Knight.

Featuring over 100 character traits to choose from, players will be able to create any insectoid creature they like "from chitin-bound masked wanderers and silk-weaving spiders to strange chimeras with all manners of insect parts attached." The Unofficial Hollow Knight RPG also includes a D6 pool core system, meaning that more dice means a better chance of success in combat, survival, and social interaction.

By experiencing martial and arcane expertise, players will be able to utilize a path-based progression system, allowing various different ways to approach the game, and encouraging multiple playthroughs. Additionally, grid-based combat will see you focus on everything from positioning to resource management and everything in between. Last but not least, a free-form skill system allows players to "have any manner of proficiency, from ancient languages and arcane research to simpler talents like cooking and sewing."

Despite being a not-for-profit, fan-made RPG experience, The Unofficial Hollow Knight RPG provides everything we could want and more from a tabletop Hollow Knight experience and better yet, you can download all of the materials you need for absolutely free. What better way to celebrate the hit Metroidvania by gathering some friends and diving into the world like never before?
