Dungeons & Dragons has been taking a lot of strolls down memory lane lately. Since the 2024 revamp, we've gotten sourcebooks on various classic settings, including Eberron and the recently released Ravenloft: The Horrors Within. All signs point toward a Greyhawk book arriving for tabletop D&D in the near future, and now it looks like D&D's best setting is also making an official return.

That's right. Classic Dragonlance is coming back in a big way this August. Sadly, it's not a new adventure book or sourcebook, but it is the first book in a new trilogy from iconic D&D authors Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. That alone should have plenty of D&D fans pumped for the new release, but the premise of the new novel is one that longtime readers of the Dragonlance series won't want to miss.

Called War Wizard, this new novel from Penguim Random House will release on August 4, 2026. Taking place years after Vinus Solamnus discouraged the use of magic, War Wizard focuses on the knight Huma and his mage friend, a boy who takes the name Magius, born to a city that distrusts all users of magic.

For those who've kept up with Dragonlance, you'll know these two already. And while their eventual confrontation with the Queen of Darkness is still a long ways off, the new novel allows readers to see what events made Huma and Magius the people they become. The official summary of War Wizard can be found below:

The boy with a rare gift for magic was born in Solamnia, a nation that despised and distrusted mages. His father tried to beat the magic out of him. The knights threatened him with imprisonment and exile. He endured tragedy and heartbreak. Yet he persisted with his magic, for the sake of the magic.

One friend stood by him when others persecuted him, a young man who was studying for the knighthood. No one could understand this unlikely friendship.

The knight was Huma. The boy took the name, Magius. The two would one day become famous in Solamnic history, fighting together to defeat the Queen of Darkness.

But that future is distant, far down the River of Time.

For now, this is the story of an unlikely friendship that would one day change the world.

Dragonlance is a fantastic D&D setting, and its world of Krynn is full of the kinds of knights and dragons you'd expect in a high fantasy setting. Despite Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen releasing for tabletop D&D back in 2022, the world has mostly been ignored over on the gaming side of things. Thankfully, we've gotten some incredible novel releases over the last few years, including the Dragonlance: Legends Collector's Edition back in February.

Weis and Hickman have kept Dragonlance alive through their novels, and War Wizard is just the latest book to return to D&D's best setting. Because this is the first book in a new trilogy, it's also a solid place to start if you've never read a Dragonlance or Dungeons & Dragons novel before. At 388 pages, War Wizard is available for preorder now with an MSRP of $30.00.
