Despite being accessible on the PlayStation 5, the lack of next-gen updates for Bloodborne means that the hit FromSoftware title is firmly stuck in the past, maintaining its limited FPS that we first saw when it launched back in 2015.

It may be considered one of the greatest video games of all time, but Bloodborne remains a touchy subject for many of its fans. Despite celebrating its 10th anniversary, the FromSoftware hit has become another victim of Sony, with the company seemingly dragging its heels when it comes to allowing Bloodborne to leave PlayStation exclusivity. As such, a PC port is not on the table, but neither is a potential remake, remaster, or sequel, it would seem.

It may be an incredible game in its own right, and is still an enjoyable experience on its native PS4, but there is no doubt that Bloodborne's popularity will shine even more thanks to at least a next-gen update. However, with one seemingly not coming anytime soon, it has been left to modders to find ways to give Bloodborne the makeover it deserves.

Courtesy of a recent article by Digital Foundry, we know now that there is a way to experience Bloodborne at 120fps alongside a super high resolution. According to the report, this feat has been made possible by a modder known as Christina, who has developed a series of patches which aim to unlock better performance for any PS4 game being run on the PS5. DF claims that, thanks to these patches, Bloodborne can run at a “properly paced” 33.3ms frames in 4K resolution, and even showed the game running locked at 60 frames per second at 2560x1440 resolution, and at 120Hz. Thanks to Christina's mods, this will now be possible for any PS4 game locked in the past, but it is all the more exciting to see it in action with our beloved Bloodborne.

“We've seen 120Hz on PS4 apps running on PS5 before — specifically Call of Duty Warzone before the native current-gen upgrade arrived,” the Digital Foundry report reads. “But via modding, it seems to be the case that just about any PS4 app can run in 120Hz mode and VRR can be enabled too. Add a frame-rate unlock patch and games like Bloodborne can run at up to 120fps. Keep resolution at 1080p and you're looking at a circa 85fps-120fps VRR experience. Move up to 1440p and it's more like 50-75fps. Still, with v-sync out of the picture, input lag reduces, making for a more responsive game. It's a world apart from the original 30fps experience.”

Although this is exciting news, we cannot expect every PlayStation 5 user to have to resort to modding to get a game running this well. As such, the call for Bloodborne to receive an official remaster is still ongoing. It has to be any day now... right?
