Ahead of any announcement about who’s going to play the next James Bond, the actor currently considered favorite to take over the role has his mind on another major release. Denis Villeneuve might be the biggest sci-fi director on the planet right now, but J. D. Dillard isn’t too far behind.

Either way, Apple TV’s adaptation of the seminal 1984 novel Neuromancer is set to be the streaming platform’s biggest new sci-fi release of the next year, and its lead actor won’t have much time to think about being 007 over the coming months. Nevertheless, the fancasting of Callum Turner as James Bond could well be about to become reality.

For those placing bets on the actor in line to take over from Daniel Craig, Turner has had the shortest odds throughout 2026. He was also going to front one of the most hotly-anticipated sci-fi shows of 2026, before Apple TV pushed back Neuromancer’s release date to early next year.

Callum Turner confirmed he’d finished filmed Neuromancer back in November 2025, as this 10-episode adaptation of William Gibson’s landmark sci-fi novel went into post-production. Turner stars in the show’s lead role as Henry Dorsett Case, a former elite cyberhacker living in a dystopian underworld, having been exiled from cyberspace.

Case is among the most iconic roles in the sci-fi genre never to have been portrayed in TV or film before now, so it’s a major vote of confidence in Turner that he’s been cast as the character. Alongside him, Neuromancer’s supporting cast is stacked with star quality.

It includes veteran British actor Mark Strong, Clémence Poésy from Harry Potter and In Bruges, Beef’s Joseph Lee, and Mayor of Kingstown’s Emma Laird. As well as director J. D. Dillard, Dark Winds creator Graham Roland has developed the miniseries for Apple TV.

For those familiar with William Gibson’s original literary work, this upcoming release is a major event in the history of television. Neuromancer is arguably the greatest American sci-fi novel, which merits comparison with the very best of cyberpunk cinema and television. It’s no coincidence that the novel was published just two years after Blade Runner’s arrival in cinemas.

This genre masterpiece isn’t just of its time, though. It’s a timeless example of expansive world-building and heartfelt characterization that poses thought-provoking philosophical conundrums which continue to be relevant. In fact, Neuromancer’s exploration of artificial consciousness and biotechnological links between humans and machines is far more pertinent to today’s world than to the era in which it was written.

Gibson’s magnum opus was a key inspiration behind the Matrix franchise, in addition to movies like Ready Player One and shows like Altered Carbon. It’s been a lengthy struggle to bring Neuromancer itself to the screen, given its depth and complexity, so this Apple TV release represents a huge creative achievement.

Callum Turner’s role as Henry Dorsett Case may well serve as a prelude to his casting as Denis Villeneuve’s 007 in the next Bond movie to be released. While there have been rumors about various stars taking the place of Daniel Craig in recent years, Turner is a potential James Bond actor who genuinely seems likely to get the part.

Of course, Villeneuve is probably the foremost sci-fi director working in cinema today, so he’ll undoubtedly be watching Neuromancer closely. There’s every chance that the mere fact Callum Turner has been cast as Case in the series has helped his cause when it comes to Eon Productions and Amazon MGM choosing the new 007.

In the meantime, cyberpunk fans have the chance to enjoy Turner in a role for the ages. Neuromancer is coming much sooner than Bond, and gives us even more to get excited about.
