Callum Turner has refused to comment on rumours he could be the next James Bond amid increasing speculation.

Earlier this year, the Eternity star became a bookie’s favourite for the coveted role, with bookmaker Coral saying in December that he had 7-4 odds to succeed Daniel Craig, ahead of the likes of Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Henry Cavill.

He was asked about the ongoing speculation in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, which came after the search for the new 007 officially kicked off last month.

In the same interview, Clooney – who directed Turner in The Boys in the Boat – told the publication he thought he’d make a “great” Bond. “He’s tall and handsome and charming and British,” he said, “so he’s the perfect guy to do it.”

With casting for Denis Villeneuve’s new vision of the world’s most famous spy now underway, Turner stressed that he knew as much as everyone else did. “I know as much as you do,” he said, refusing to comment on whether or not he was interested in taking the gig, should it be offered.

“I’m not going to comment on that,” he said, but did shed light on what it was like to constantly field these questions.

“I’ll tell you what’s so funny about the Bond thing,” he continued. “Even your best friends ask you, people text you that you haven’t spoken to for 10 years – and you know nothing! It’s such a weird thing of something happening and nothing happening at all. I genuinely know nothing. I just find it quite amusing.”

He also touched on his relationship with wife, Dua Lipa, who he wed in an intimate ceremony at Old Marylebone Town Hall in London on May 31. “You want to be inspired by the person you’re with,” he said of the pop singer. As for their demanding schedules, he said they “make sure that we’re together as much as possible”.

It will be the first film since Amazon MGM Studios took over the creative direction of the character, and recently, former Bond actor Léa Seydoux said she was “sad” that the company was in control of the franchise.

As for who is in contention for the part, reports emerged last month that You actor Tom Francis was auditioning for the role.

Earlier this month, Idris Elba confirmed he would not be playing Bond, saying that he felt some audiences wouldn’t “go for” a Black actor playing the role.
