WARNING! This article contains SPOILERS for House of the Dragon season 3, episode 2!
Rhaenyra Targaryen is fully taking charge as the war takes a brutal turn in House of the Dragon season 3.
After having to take a more passive, reactive role throughout the political strife and battles in House of the Dragon seasons 1 and 2, Emma D'Arcy's Rhaenyra Targaryen finally becomes a more active figure in the war in season 3. Though she intended to fly into battle before being locked in her chambers in episode 1, it isn't until House of the Dragon season 3, episode 2 that Rhaenyra mounts Syrax and flies to King's Landing, brandishes a sword as remaining Greens attempt to stop her and Daemon, and beheads Otto Hightower with her own hands before ascending the Iron Throne.
With Rhaenyra's less active role being a notable complaint among audiences throughout season 2, in particular, the crucial House of the Dragon character's more engaged, on-the-ground involvement in the war has become a welcome shift in season 3. Jace's death and a reminder of Aegon's Song of Ice and Fire dream spurred her into action to seize the throne, with the beheading of Otto now ushering in a new era of Rhaenyra's reign that will be defined by taking more charge without having to apologize for her actions. In an interview with ScreenRant's Liam Crowley, Rhaenyra Targaryen actor Emma D'Arcy expressed further excitement around finally getting to see the character "live" and "released into action" after being in stasis:
Emma D'Arcy: "Yeah, I mean, she's spent two seasons being prevented from action. We meet her often having to defend quite a precarious position. She's often backfooted having to play from a reactionary position. Yeah, I want to see the character live actually. I want to see what happens when those reins are off. And so although I was kind of tongue in cheek when I made this public statement about wanting her to finally get a weapon, I think it's a manifestation of wanting her to be released into action, having been in stasis for at least a season."
While Rhaenyra was more reactionary in season 2, her role was still largely authentic to George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood book. In the novel, Rhaenyra wasn't involved in early battles and wasn't known to have personally wielded weapons in combat, but rather commanded others into battle and took a more active role in war strategy. In season 3, more of this version of Rhaenyra will come to light as she takes the Iron Throne and works to bring the war to a victorious end, being more directly involved in the action and command rather than largely having things happen to and around her.
Rhaenyra and Daemon have taken King's Landing, but there's still plenty more fighting to be done before the Targaryen civil war is won. Criston and Gwayne are marching with their host through the Riverlands, Ormund Hightower has command of the Hightower army in the Reach with Daeron Targaryen and his dragon, Tessarion, and Aemond has now killed House Strong's remaining members at Harrenhal and intends to hold the castle with Vhagar. With six more episodes of House of the Dragon season 3 remaining, Rhaenyra must continue to make harsh, proactive decisions in order to keep the throne and defeat the Greens.
With Ryan Condal having previously teased that Rhaenyra steps more into religious fanaticism and a "movement toward tyranny" in season 3, a dark new side of the House Targaryen member is set to emerge now that the "reins are off" and she's taking more action. Rhaenyra's grief over Jace will almost certainly decrease her tendency to prioritize mercy in this war, needing to ensure that her heirs remain on the Iron Throne in order to fulfill Aegon the Conqueror's prophecy.
Condal has stated that the already-renewed House of the Dragon season 4, which is currently slated for a 2028 release on HBO, will be the series' final outing, so time is winding down to draw Rhaenyra's and the overall Dance of the Dragons' stories to a close. More tragedy, death, and betrayal can be expected as the series gradually approaches the end of the war, putting Rhaenyra's leadership, strategy, morality, and limits to the test in coming episodes.
New episodes of House of the Dragon season 3 release Sunday nights at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max.
