This year got off to a strong start for Netflix. The Alan Ritchson-led sci-fi thriller War Machine became the year's most-watched film, and it has officially entered the streamer's Top Ten most-watched movies of all time. Netflix has also seen significant success with recent movies like Charlize Theron and Taron Egerton's survival thriller Apex. Meanwhile, the Peaky Blinders sequel film was also a success. All that has happened in less than half a year, and the streamer's upcoming slate of movies and TV shows for the second half features some unmissable stories. One of them is a sci-fi thriller set to debut this August.
This film features two powerhouse actors in the lead roles playing a couple. The film blends sci-fi and post-apocalyptic horror when a couple and their two children are sealed inside their house with no explanation as to why, and no way to get out. The family must learn how to survive as their resources dwindle and their circumstances take a toll. However, matters worsen when a mysterious threat surfaces, further imperiling their survival.
Titled The Last House, the film was written by Matthew Robinson. In the director's chair is seasoned French director Louis Leterrier, known for thrillers like The Transporter and Fast and Furious. Past Lives' Greta Lee and The Secret Agent's Wagner Moura star as Ann and Jason, the couple in the middle of this saga. They watch their children, Graham and Ruth, grow up in isolation with two actors playing each character at different stages. Noah Alexander Sosnowski and Gabriel Chung play younger and older Graham, respectively, while Riley Chung and Emma Ho play younger and older Ruth, respectively.
Your answers point to the world your instincts were built for. This is the universe your temperament, your survival instincts, and your particular brand of stubbornness were made for.
You took the red pill a long time ago — probably before anyone offered it to you. You're a systems thinker who can't help but notice the seams in things.
The wasteland doesn't reward the clever or the well-connected — it rewards those who are hard to kill and harder to break. That's you.
You'd survive here because you know how to exist in moral grey areas without losing yourself completely.
Arrakis is the most hostile environment in the known universe — and you are precisely the kind of person it rewards.
The galaxy far, far away is vast, loud, and in a constant state of violent political upheaval — and you wouldn't have it any other way.
Netflix has already released a trailer for the film, premiering on August 7. Ann and Jason's family is your typical American family caught in the morning rush. But today, no one's going anywhere after they learn all their entrances and exits are sealed by an unexplained force. Panic gives way to surrender as days turn to months, and the family must survive. They also learn that this phenomenon has not just happened to every house on their street, but it has happened throughout the entire world. It's not the worst thing for people who love each other to be trapped in the same space, but love can't keep their bellies full. So they devise ways to survive by turning part of their house into a garden, and for over three years, they survive. The world outside recovers as flora and fauna take over. But the worst is yet to come because there is a monstrous threat outside, so being indoors is not the worst idea.
The Last House hits Netflix on August 7. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
