It’s been a long road to The Batman Part II. Ever since Matt Reeves delivered a version of Gotham that felt moodier, sadder, and more psychologically bruised than most comic book movies, fans have been eager to see what comes next. But with the sequel taking its time and Reeves staying largely quiet, that anticipation has only gotten more intense. At this point, even the smallest update has been enough to get fans excited. Now, Andy Serkis has offered one that actually feels substantial.
While promoting his upcoming film Animal Farm, Serkis was first asked by Collider's Steve Weintraub whether his schedule would even allow him to return as Alfred while also juggling his commitments to The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. Thankfully, for fans of his take on Bruce Wayne’s loyal protector, that doesn’t seem to be a problem. He told Collider, "I'm pretty certain it's all going to work out. Yeah, we're working on it, but I think it's all looking good."
Whether you're an innie or an outie, you've undoubtedly enjoyed the workplace comedies of Adam Scott. Let's all cater to this state auditor.
That was already encouraging, but then the conversation turned to the script itself. Asked what his reaction was to finally reading Reeves’ screenplay after such a long wait, Serkis didn’t exactly hold back. "He is a supremo writer and director, as you well know," Serkis said. "He really wanted to take his time making sure this is actually right, and it is an incredible script. It really is. It’s so emotional and very powerful, so I'm very much looking forward to it."
The first Batman wasn’t just about the action or the detective angle. It worked because it had real weight to it. It was a story about grief, rage, isolation, and a man trying to figure out what kind of symbol he was actually becoming. So hearing Serkis describe the sequel script as emotional and very powerful feels like a sign Reeves hasn’t lost sight of what made the first film work. The conversation also ended on a note that will feel very familiar to anyone trying to avoid spoilers while still craving updates. After Weintraub admitted he was jealous Serkis had read the script but didn’t actually want to know anything, Serkis replied, "I do know that! I know exactly what you mean, so this is why I'm not going to say anything more about it."
The Batman Part II will premiere in October 2027. Stay tuned at Collider for further updates.
