After centering its story on Jack Reacher for four years, Prime Video's Reacher is finally moving in a new direction and switching main characters in an upcoming installment. While Alan Ritchson will continue to lead the main Reacher show in season 4 and beyond, the Prime Video detective series is expanding its lore with a new spin-off led by Maria Sten's Frances Neagley.

Lee Child's Jack Reacher book series has close to 30 different installments. Despite this, none of the books have ever tried to shift their focus away from Jack Reacher and allowed another character to shine. Even Tom Cruise's Jack Reacher movies took the same approach and centered their stories around the overpowered titular character.

Prime Video's Reacher has also walked down the same path by focusing primarily on Alan Ritchson's Jack Reacher and only featuring him as the franchise's big lead. However, after all these years, the franchise is finally taking a creative leap by bringing us Neagley's own spin-off. For the first time in decades, we will get to see Jack Reacher as a side character while Frances Neagley takes the spotlight.

Since Reacher's success on Prime Video, so far, has almost entirely been built around Alan Ritchson’s massive screen presence as the titular character, the upcoming Neagley spin-off is a gamble. Unlike Bosch's spin-off, Ballard, the Neagley spin-off is also not a mere follow-up to Reacher. It is premiering while the main Reacher series is still going incredibly strong.

Owing to this, the spin-off also risks being overshadowed by its own parent series, which would even prompt many viewers to compare it with Reacher. Despite this, if it works out well, it could benefit the Reacher franchise in more ways than one. For instance, since the Neagley spin-off is not based on any existing books, it has the creative freedom to be more dynamic and less rigid with its storytelling.

While the Reacher series will continue to thrive on the books' established "lone wolf" formula, the Neagley spin-off could bring more novelty to the series by walking through both procedural and espionage-driven storylines. This might also backfire on the spin-off since it strips away the franchise's established formula for success. However, the lack of a narrative safety net could also make Neagley more exciting.

The Neagley spin-off also promises to delve deeper into its titular character's backstory and motivations. So far, little seems to be known about why Neagley has an aversion to touch and what truly drives her moral compass. After the Neagley spin-off reveals more about her past and personal struggles, viewers will likely find her more rootable in both her standalone series and the parent show.

Even Jack Reacher's appearance as a side character in the upcoming Neagley spin-off will give viewers a glimpse of a whole new side of him. Audiences are used to seeing him as a wrecking ball of a character who takes all the limelight when he shows up on the screen.

After seeing him as a sidekick in the Neagley spin-off, viewers might start perceiving him as a more human and empathetic character who is willing to step back to let his friends shine as investigators.

Neagley only appears in a handful of Jack Reacher books. In the Prime Video series, however, she has been a part of every season so far. While her presence has never been shoehorned into the show's story, it seemed like Reacher season 3 merely used her as a forced plot device to set up her upcoming spin-off.

Once Neagley's own spin-off establishes her as a solid and rootable detective character, the main Reacher series will not have to feature her in every season. As a result, Prime Video's Reacher will be able to stay more loyal to the original books and walk viewers through more solo Jack Reacher adventures.

One of the reasons why Jack Reacher is so appealing as a vigilante detective is that he never relies on anyone else. He is self-sufficient, and, as much as he appreciates Neagley, he does not tie himself down to long-term partnerships. By making Neagley a part of all three Reacher seasons, however, the Prime Video show has slightly chipped away at the Alan Ritchson character's lone-wolf appeal.

By giving Neagley her own spin-off and eventually not forcing her into every Reacher story in the future, the Prime Video show even restores everything that makes the Alan Ritchson character incredibly compelling. Hopefully, the Neagley spin-off will be as good as viewers expect it to be and will evolve the Reacher franchise in a direction instead of harming it.

Reacher follows Jack Reacher, a former military police investigator, as he navigates civilian life. Without a phone and carrying minimal belongings, Reacher drifts across the country, experiencing the nation he once served, and encounters intriguing challenges along the way.
