With Stranger Things having ended in 2025, Netflix has been looking for a replacement to fill the gap, and it may have found exactly that thanks to the creative team behind the original show. Netflix has built an impressive library filled with shows across numerous genres and from all over the world. However, Stranger Things remains a unique project that left a hole in the streamer.

Thanks to the incredible combination of nostalgia, sci-fi horror, and a talented cast of young performers who brought Hawkins and the Upside Down to life, the series became a flagship of the platform. However, Stranger Things also had some weaknesses. From the show's controversial resolution to the long waits between seasons, it wasn't always easy to be a Stranger Things fan.

Now, it appears as though The Duffer Brothers, the creative duo who created Stranger Things, are returning to Netflix with a brand-new concept that could fill the void and expand on the world they already created with an untitled Stranger Things spin-off series that is currently in development.

The Duffer Brothers have been confirmed to be working on a new spin-off, which would pick up a story set in the same world as Stranger Things, but with a new cast of characters, a new location, and even a new time. At present, there is very little is known about this project, but Mike Wheeler actor, Finn Wolfhard, has shared what he envisioned for a spin-off.

Wolfhard discussed the idea of a David Lynch-style anthology series that left Hawkins in the rear-view while exploring new stories that connect to the Upside Down. In a different interview, Wolfhard also confirmed that when he initially presented a spin-off idea in a casual conversation during the recording of Stranger Things season 4, the Duffer Brothers were stunned to find out his idea was precisely what they were planning.

Now, it's not confirmed for certain that this is the plot of the upcoming spin-off, but there is certainty that the original Hawkins crew will not be the focus of the series, and new stories are being brought to the front.

Meanwhile, Stranger Things: Tales From '85 is an animated spin-off that returns to the gap between seasons 2 and 3 to follow what the original group was doing during that time. This series does have one half of the Duffer Brothers duo as a co-creator, Matt Duffer, along with Jennifer Muro and Eric Robles.

However, despite following the original group of characters, this show has other actors step in to voice the gang, while also adding in a few new faces. The result is a very different end product from what fans of Stranger Things have grown to love, but it does build out the universe slightly more and add context for superfans.

The new Stranger Things spin-off is set to do a lot more than expand on the story that is seen in the original show, which is why it's such an exciting prospect for Netflix. Not only will it build out the broader universe and hopefully establish some much-needed lore about the Upside Down, but it has the chance to regain some of the trust that the Duffers lost with the Stranger Things finale.

With a story that isn't burdened by the heavy weight of a familiar fan favorite character, and provides a blank canvas to get more creative with the lore, the new spin-off has serious potential. Until then, fans of Stranger Things will need to look back and dive into the animated series to get their fix, but hopefully the wait for the new spin-off won't be too agonizingly long.
