For nearly two decades, Brokeback Mountain has remained one of the most emotionally devastating love stories ever put to screen. Its power never came from grand romantic gestures or idealized storytelling. Instead, it resonated because of its honesty, heartbreak, and willingness to explore complicated emotions without easy answers. According to You're My Nicotine creator Claire Seckler, that same emotional authenticity is exactly what inspired her own acclaimed queer romance series.

In a recent exclusive interview, Seckler described Brokeback Mountain as one of her favorite stories of all time, praising both Annie Proulx's original work and the acclaimed film adaptation. More importantly, she revealed that the emotional impact of its ending has stayed with her for years. That lingering feeling of heartbreak and reflection became a guiding influence while creating You're My Nicotine, a series that has steadily built a reputation as one of the most compelling queer comics currently available.

"You're My Nicotine is a dark romance about two people, whose connection is as hard to break as an addiction, exploring love and identity." — Claire Seckler

When discussing the stories that inspired You're My Nicotine, Seckler pointed directly to Brokeback Mountain's realism and emotional rawness. Rather than focusing on idealized romance, she was drawn to the darker and more tragic aspects of storytelling. The emotional weight of the relationship between Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist left a lasting impression on her, particularly the film's unforgettable final moments.

Which fictional romances have inspired you the most for You're My Nicotine?

"I have fairly limited knowledge of the romance genre so this one isn’t strictly romance but it heavily inspired my writing: Brokeback Mountain is one of my favourite stories of all time. I tend to be drawn to stories that are dark and tragic, and Brokeback Mountain fits that perfectly. What I particularly appreciate is the realism and the rawness that was beautifully captured in Annie Proulx’s prose, and the excellent execution in the film really brought that to life. I could never forget the emotional impact I felt when I saw the ending scene of the film for the first time, and that kind of feeling is something I want to create for the audience of my work." — Claire Seckler

That influence is easy to recognize within You're My Nicotine. Like Brokeback Mountain, the series is not interested in presenting a perfect love story. Instead, it explores relationships shaped by identity struggles, personal flaws, emotional wounds, and difficult life circumstances. The result is a romance that feels grounded in reality rather than fantasy.

Seckler explained that one of her primary goals is creating the same kind of emotional reaction she experienced when first watching Brokeback Mountain. Rather than simply entertaining readers, she wants the story to stay with them long after they finish a chapter. That commitment to emotional impact helps explain why the series has resonated so strongly with readers looking for more mature and authentic queer storytelling.

While Brokeback Mountain served as a creative influence, Seckler emphasized that You're My Nicotine is also deeply rooted in personal experiences. She revealed that the story's main characters draw inspiration from her own life, the experiences of people around her, and stories shared by queer individuals online. That foundation gives the comic an authenticity that many readers immediately recognize.

"I started writing this comic in high school, and a lot of the early passion came from the frustration from having seen enough queer-bating in mainstream media, that I just wanted to make something real." — Claire Seckler

Claire Seckler originally began developing the project during high school. At the time, she was frustrated by years of queer-baiting in mainstream entertainment and wanted to create something more genuine. As the series evolved, however, it became much more than a reaction to media trends. It transformed into an attempt to tell a story that could make readers feel understood and represented.

Seckler believes strong storytelling requires real emotions and lived experiences, especially when addressing sensitive subjects such as identity, addiction, and mental health. Those themes sit at the heart of You're My Nicotine. In fact, she summarizes the series as a dark romance about two people whose connection is as difficult to break as an addiction, while exploring love and self-discovery along the way.

Part of what makes You're My Nicotine stand out is its willingness to tackle struggles that are rarely explored in mainstream media. Seckler openly discussed growing up in a conservative household and navigating her own identity as a bisexual woman. She noted that some of those personal conflicts found their way into the comic's themes and character journeys.

"As someone who is bisexual and grew up in a conservative household, I’ve always struggled with my own identity. It is almost ironic that when I created You’re My Nicotine, I made the series with mostly male characters because I was still deeply struggling with some internalised homophobia. I thought if it was a GL series it would be like I’m outing myself and it was something I wasn’t ready for at the time, and I also feared it would hit too close to home." — Claire Seckler

At the same time, the series reflects even more cultural influences. Seckler credits early-2010s internet fandom culture, Tumblr communities, fanfiction, and alternative rock music from the era as important inspirations. Those elements give the comic a distinct atmosphere while reinforcing its focus on nostalgia, identity, and belonging.

Pride Month has finally arrived, and so here are 10 amazing BL stories that every anime fan needs to watch at least once in their life.

Currently about halfway complete and available to read on GlobalComix, You're My Nicotine already feels like a landmark work in modern queer comics. Like Brokeback Mountain before it, the series understands that the most powerful romances are often the ones willing to embrace complexity, pain, and emotional vulnerability. If Claire Seckler succeeds in delivering the ending she has envisioned, readers may look back on You're My Nicotine as this generation's defining tragic queer love story.
