EXCLUSIVE: Thai drama Gohan, produced by Bangkok-based studio GDH 559, has secured a June 26 release date in mainland China where Road Pictures is handling local distribution.
Co-directed by Nattawut ‘Baz’ Poonpiriya, Chayanop Boonprakob and Atta Hemwadee, the film follows a white stray dog across three different stages of its life with different owners.
Released over the Songkran holiday, the film has crossed the $3M (THB100M) box office benchmark in Thailand and topped the Vietnamese box office when it opened there in May. GDH, which announced ahead of Cannes that it has sold the film to more than 40 territories, also produced breakout international hits How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies and Bad Genius, both of which were box office hits in mainland China.
Poonpiriya and cast members Jinjett Wattanasin and Tontawan Tantivejakul are visiting China ahead of the film’s release, attending both the Beijing premiere on June 18, followed by a Shanghai International Film Festival special screening on June 19.
Road Pictures previously handled the China release of Nadine Labaki’s Capernaum, which grossed more than $50M in China in 2019, and more recently Oscar-winning French title Anatomy Of A Fall, which grossed just shy of $4M becoming the highest-grossing European title in China that year.
Gohan joins a busy summer schedule of local and international films in China, with upcoming Hollywood releases including Disclosure Day (June 12), Toy Story 5 (June 19), Supergirl (June 26), Minions & Monsters (July 3) and Moana (July 10).
Chinese-language releases over the summer include martial arts action title The Furious, starring Xie Miao and Joe Taslim, which opened today and is currently topping the box office; as well as animation titles Three Kingdoms: The Beginning, produced by Light Chaser Animation, scheduled for July 10, and All Wishes Come True!, from Pearl Studio and CMC Pictures, set for July 24.
Damai Entertainment’s romantic drama Dear You is still playing strongly at the China box office, with a cumulative gross of $247M (RMB1.67BN) as of today (June 11), making it the second biggest release of 2026 so far.
