EXCLUSIVE: Ted Lasso star Nick Mohammed is turning his The Young Magicians books into an animated series.

Mohammed is teaming with Blink Industries and BBC Studios Kids & Family on the adaptation, which follows the lives of four talented young magicians – Zack, Sophie, Jonny and Alex – as they uncover secret conspiracies and hidden dangers within London’s most exclusive club: The Magic Circle. Mohammed wrote two books in the series, The Thieves Almanac and The 24-Hour Telepathy Plot, published in 2017 and 2020 respectively. They are based on his first love, magic, an obsession he has had since he was young.

The comedy adventure show is forged for the over-eight age group and Mohammed is showrunning and exec-producing. He gained worldwide recognition for his Emmy-nominated role as Nate in Apple TV’s Ted Lasso, while he has also appeared in Slow Horses and co-created Intelligence. He recently got to the final of the BBC’s Celebrity Traitors, the UK’s most-watched show of 2025.

The adaptation comes from Blink’s first-look deal with BBC Studios Kids & Family, which last year unveiled martial arts show Children Vs Battle SuperStars. Blink makes the likes of Dead End: Paranormal Park and Love, Death & Robots. BBC Studios also has a development, co-production and distribution deal in place with Mohammed, struck three years back, but this is distinct from the Young Magicians project.

“It’s been an absolute dream come true getting to dive back into the world of The Young Magicians, even more so to develop this as an animated series with Blink Industries and BBC Studios,” said Mohammed. “Magic was, and kind of still is, my first true love, and so to share that passion with a wider audience, given magic’s rich and bountiful history, its oddness and curiosities, has always been a hope of mine.”

Blink CEO James Stevenson Bretton said he “fell in love with the charming and exciting world that Nick built in his books and it’s no surprise that Nick has been able to translate that magic into such an exciting show.”

The news comes a week after Studiocanal and Superprod revealed they are adapting UK TV personality Dermot O’Leary’s book series Toto the Ninja Cat into an animated series.

Mohammed’s news was revealed at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
