Tom Hanks fans are on top of the world right now after watching the Oscar-winning star return to his signature role as Woody in Toy Story 5. Hanks can also be seen and heard narrating a new World War II series, World War II With Tom Hanks, which is blowing up on streaming. The series is far from the first experience Hanks has with the World War II genre, though. Way back in the 1990s, he teamed up with Steven Spielberg for one of the greatest war movies ever made, Saving Private Ryan. The duo later reunited to produce the Apple TV series, Masters of the Air, starring Callum Turner and Austin Butler. Back in 2020, Hanks starred in a gripping and emotional World War II movie that is quietly becoming one of the biggest streaming hits of all time before the debut of its sequel.

Back in 2020, Tom Hanks headlined the Apple TV original World War II naval thriller, Greyhound. Hanks agreed to star in Greyhound under the condition that the film would be given a theatrical release, but when it was dumped by the studio during the COVID-19 pandemic, it was Apple TV that came to the rescue. Greyhound was denied a theatrical release and instead released straight to streaming on Apple TV around the world, and while Hanks originally expressed his discontent with this, he has since softened his stance and thanked Apple TV for giving the film a home at all. This method worked for Apple TV also, as Greyhound is still in the global top 10 more than five years removed from its premiere — it’s quietly become one of Apple TV’s biggest streaming movies in history.

Your answers point to the iconic universe your values, your instincts, and your particular way of seeing the world were built for. This is where you would find your people — and your purpose.

You believe in the cause — in the idea that freedom is worth fighting for even when the odds are impossible and the empire is vast.

You understand, in the deepest part of yourself, that the journey matters as much as the destination — and that the world's beauty is worth protecting even at great cost.

You believe that love, loyalty, and doing what's right are not naive sentiments — they are the most powerful forces in any world, magical or otherwise.

You see the world clearly — its power structures, its hypocrisies, its brutal arithmetic — and you are not paralysed by that clarity. You use it.

You believe the future is worth building — that curiosity, cooperation, and the expansion of understanding are not just ideals but the most practical path forward for any civilisation.

An official synopsis for Greyhound, which also stars Stephen Graham, reads as follows:

“WWII rages across the Atlantic as Commander Ernest Krause — a devout, battle-tested officer on his first wartime command — leads an Allied convoy of 37 ships through the deadliest stretch of ocean on earth. Outmatched and relentlessly hunted by German U-boat wolf packs, Krause must outsmart an invisible enemy before it devours everything under his protection.”

Greyhound did so well for Apple TV that the streamer announced years ago it was working on a sequel to the film. It took some time, but Greyhound finally began production earlier this year in Australia, and cameras are still rolling as more footage is captured by the day. It’s unclear at this time when Greyhound 2 will be released, but it could come out as soon as next year.
