Deezer announces the launch of its Remix Lab, which enables fans to remix songs with the full consent of the original artists and rights holders.

On Wednesday, Deezer unveiled the launch of its new Remix Lab, allowing fans to remix songs with the full consent of the original artists and rights holders. The music streamer also says that artists will get paid for every stream of the remixed tracks.

To try it out, the Remix Lab feature can be found on select artists’ pages in the Deezer app. Notably, unlike YouTube and Spotify, which rely on AI tools for fan-made remixes, Deezer is implementing in-app tools to create remixes, like adding reverb or adjusting tempo. “More elaborate” options, such as changes to musical genre and style, are also available.

Deezer’s Remix Lab is initially available only in its native France, but there are plans to roll it out to other countries—eventually. Currently, users can remix tracks from select French artists, including the legendary Celine Dion.

“This remix tool perfectly embodies our vision of offering a product that enriches the listening experience for fans by allowing them to participate in the creative process and create a deeper connection with their favorite music directly in the Deezer app,” said CEO Alexis Lanternier. “True to our DNA, these features are made possible with full participation of the artists, fully respecting rights, and maximizing earnings for each track.”

The feature runs contrary to the AI-dominated direction in which most other streamers have pivoted. Deezer has remained a beacon among its competitors for having taken a firm stance against AI.

Recently, the company introduced a tool that analyzes playlists from streaming services like Apple Music and Spotify to detect AI-generated tracks. That follows the launch of their AI-detection tool, which was also made available to other companies for licensing. Deezer is also recognized as one of the few streaming services that actively removes AI-generated tracks from its recommendations and omits them altogether from its editorial playlists.
