Steven Spielberg confirms the three-decades-long rumor that Harrison Ford turned down Jurassic Park, and how the Academy Award-winning director felt about Ford's "no."

Released in 1993, Jurassic Park is an all-time classic and one of the most popular movies directed by Steven Spielberg. Jurassic Park starred Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum alongside lifelike, revolutionary animatronic and CGI dinosaurs. Neill returned as Dr. Alan Grant in 2001's Jurassic Park III, and the original trio reunited in 2022's Jurassic World Dominion.

To promote Disclosure Day, Steven Spielberg and Emily Blunt guested on Happy Sad Confused podcast, where host Joshua Horowitz asked the director to confirm whether Harrison Ford turned down the role of Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park. Read Spielberg and Blunt's quotes and watch the video below.

Steven Spielberg: “Yes, he did. He may not remember that, but I sure do.”

Steven Spielberg: “I wasn’t cross. I was crushed. But then, Sam Neill became available, and he’s Alan Grant. It now belongs to him.”

Jurassic Park and movie history would certainly have been altered if Harrison Ford had said yes to playing Alan Grant. It would have given Ford and Spielberg yet another blockbuster movie collaboration outside of the Indiana Jones series, and Harrison as Grant would have changed the course of the Jurassic franchise.

Given Harrison Ford's iconic role as Indiana Jones and A-list action hero movie star pedigree, it's a no-brainer that Jurassic Park would have been offered to him. Perhaps Ford didn't want to lead a movie where he played another hat-wearing scientist and had to run away from dinosaurs.

In 1992, when Jurassic Park was in production, Harrison Ford was widely in demand. Ford had just taken over the role of Jack Ryan from Alec Baldwin in 1992's Patriot Games, and he was filming The Fugitive. Ford starred as Dr. Richard Kimble in The Fugitive, which was also a box office hit in 1993.

In addition, Ford played Indiana Jones again in an episode of The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles while still sporting the beard he grew for The Fugitive. Harrison had a full plate in 1992 while Steven Spielberg was filming Jurassic Park in Hawaii.

Spielberg has also recently reaffirmed how the James Bond franchise turned him down as a director in the late 1970s. This directly led to George Lucas pitching Spielberg on Indiana Jones. Lucas and Spielberg eventually cast Sean Connery, the original 007, as Indy's father in 1989's Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

Still, Harrison Ford as Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park is a fascinating 'What if?' scenario. What would the Jurassic franchise, which is now going on an eighth movie reportedly in development following 2025's Jurassic World Rebirth, have been like if Harrison Ford said yes to playing Dr. Alan Grant?
