J.J. Abrams says he has seen “a taste” of Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s upcoming Tom Cruise starrer Digger and has “no doubt” the actor is “about to blow our collective mind” with his performance.

Abrams was responding to a viral post from Cruise yesterday in which the megastar posted a career retrospective and teased some new footage of the Warner Bros film.

My dear friend is no doubt about to blow our collective mind with Digger. What an undeniably spectacular career. What a bold and wild next step. Only seen a taste of the film… cannot wait for October to see the rest! https://t.co/KdDqdJbZzG

In Digger, Cruise will adopt a thick Southern accent, a beer belly and thinning white hair to play an oil baron whose company may have set off an ecological disaster that could also spark a nuclear war. John Goodman portrays a U.S. president. Riz Ahmed, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jesse Plemons also star in the Warner Bros production.

Abrams said in a post on X today: “My dear friend is no doubt about to blow our collective mind with Digger. What an undeniably spectacular career. What a bold and wild next step. Only seen a taste of the film… cannot wait for October to see the rest!”

Cruise and Abrams are known to be admirers of each other’s work and first collaborated on 2006 blockbuster Mission: Impossible III.

Digger‘s trailer is set for release on July 13th ahead of the film’s October 2 release. The anticipated film was widely speculated as a potential Venice Film Festival title but Deadline revealed earlier this year that the Lido isn’t a likely destination for the feature.

Cruise’s mini retrospective posted yesterday spotlighted some of his great roles, from Top Gun to Rain Man, Born On The Fourth Of July to Jerry Maguire.

“For the last 46 years, it has been my privilege to work alongside countless talented artists and crews to create these characters, stories, and films for you all,” he wrote in the caption of his social post. “I’m looking forward to seeing you at the movies!”
