Cinema's newest king of the horror genre has just been crowned thanks to one exciting-looking reported eight-figure sized deal, which cements them as a heavy hitter in the world of film to pay particular attention to. Horror has long been a corner of the world of movies where some names and faces are synonymous with the genre, as figures like John Carpenter, George A. Romero, and David Cronenberg prove.

That said, plenty of newer horror icons have come up in more recent years, particularly since horror is a place where well-established and newer directors, actors, and general creatives alike can make a name for themselves, with folks such as Jordan Peele, Ari Aster, and Mike Flanagan alongside many more helping cultivate a new era for horror while carving out their own place in the film ecosystem.

Excitingly, the newest name to join this roster appears to have been made concrete by the some updates about the latest film deals and what they say about the level of belief and promise around one filmmaker, whose latest work has further established them as a talented creator who is set for big things going forward.

While Curry Barker was a less well-known creative in the world of film until 2026, the years of Barker writing and directing his own digital stories - as can be seen via short horror movie Milk & Serial and his comedy work online - have provided him with a distinct style and talent when it comes to the matter of telling compelling stories that made his main theatrical debut, Obsession, a major hit with audiences.

Following Obsession's critical and commercial success - with the movie having netted itself almost $300 million on a reported less than $1 million budget, and currently maintaining a 94% score from critics and casual moviegoers on Rotten Tomatoes - Barker has garnered a staggeringly promising deal for one of his next upcoming movies.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, Curry Barker is now signed on to write, produce and direct another film for Blumhouse Atomic Monster and Universal, which is "described as a rich eight-figure deal" for the creator. Though this bigger number is no doubt partially explained by the several different roles Barker will play simultaneously once more for said film, it definitely also pays testament to the significance of Obsession, and Barker's rise to become one of the biggest new directors in the world of horror.

Of course, Curry Barker already has some other confirmed films on the way following directly after Obsession. Barker also wrote, directed, and will star in Anything But Ghosts, which will be his next original feature, and will provide further examples of how the creative is able to work in several different roles within one project.

Interestingly, Barker is also signed on to work on a film franchise that has notably existed as a cornerstone of the horror world for many decades now, as April 2026 brought with it news that Curry Barker is set to write and direct the upcoming reboot for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, putting Barker behind the wheel for one of the biggest horror film series of all time.

While this deal predates the release of and subsequent reactions to Obsession, the film's results certainly help cement the idea that Curry Barker is the ideal candidate for the job, and can replicate what made the gritty low-budget horror hit become a cultural cornerstone once more while also making the reboot his own.
