Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender is an adaptation of Nickelodeon's TV show of the same name, which ran from 2005 to 2008. The live-action series follows the war that was triggered by the Fire Nation's quest for power. To end the war, Aang, the last surviving Airbender, must learn to master all four elements and save the world.
The second season of Netflix's adaptation of the hit animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender left audiences with one of its biggest deviations from the original show. And, the showrunners, Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani, recently revealed to GamesRadar+ that the decision wasn't one they made lightly. According to them, the shocking ending was part of the plan from the very beginning.
The Netflix series concludes its second season with Aang (Gordon Cormier) facing off against Princess Azula (Elizabeth Yu) in the intense final battle. During the fight, Aang struggles with the decision to kill her. Unfortunately, his hesitance came at a very high price as Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2's finale leaves his fate ambiguous.
Azula seizes the opportunity to strike him with a lightning attack. The blast appears to kill him and sever his connection to the Avatars. Although Katara (Kiawentiio) tries to save him using her waterbending healing abilities, Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2's finale ends with Aang seemingly dead.
Co-showrunner Boylan explained that the creative team's reasoning behind this tragic cliffhanger was an effort to shock the viewers, especially fans of the original Nickelodeon animated series. She said they wanted the finale to be able to surprise both the newer viewers and the ones who have followed the franchise from the very beginning.
She added that the cliffhanger was always part of their vision. She explained that the goal was to make audiences briefly believe the worst had happened, giving the season finale more emotional weight instead of having the audience just automatically assume that everything was going to be ok.
Raisani agreed, saying Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2's finale serves as a natural transition between the second and third installments. Rather than immediately resolving the entire battle, they wanted to leave viewers discussing with the results of the final showdown and wondering how the remaining protagonists could recover if Aang is actually dead.
Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 is available to stream on Netflix. There is no confirmed release date for season 3 at the time of this article's publication.
