Originally established by a core team of just 30 developers headed by ex-Ubisoft employee Guillaume Broche, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 went on to become one of the most successful video games of all time when it launched back in April of last year.
Taking place in a dark fantasy Belle Époque setting, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 tells the story of a group known as Expedition 33 who must travel across a destroyed Paris in order to face the Paintress, a being who causes a yearly Gommage, causing those at or above a certain age to be wiped from existence.
The unique concept as well as stunning visuals, voice acting, narrative, soundtrack, and more, made it an instant hit, and it was not long before the RPG by Sandfall Interactive went on to meet critical acclaim. It was such a success that it won the coveted Game of the Year award, as well as becoming the most awarded game in The Game Awards' history, winning a whopping nine out of its 13 nominations.
With Sandfall Interactive still riding the high of an incredible year in 2025, it has not yet spoken about the future. Will there be a Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 sequel? Or will it remain a very successful standalone with the team moving on to a brand-new IP?
Well, at the time of writing, we simply do not know, but that has not stopped fans over on r/expedition33 from discussing the potential sequel, and if there was one, what title they think Sandfall may go with.
"If there was a second Clair Obscur game (obviously it wouldn’t be E33), what do you think would be a killer title?" The post in question reads. "How do you imagine the title plays into the main game?"
Not only that, but the original user had a very interesting suggestion, saying, "I’ll start, Clair Obscur: Dualite - Yin and Yang, two opposing or complementary forces existing together."
With over 100 comments racked up, it is safe to say that fans of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 have plenty of ideas when it comes to the future of the RPG, even though many guess that the potential sequel would just include a title, such as 'Expedition 33' but with a different number, and therefore, focusing on a different team.
However, another user had a different suggestion. "There's definitely going to be a second Clair Obscur game, it's just not going to be an Expedition 33 sequel. It'll be the title of the franchise, like Final Fantasy."
With a story as unique as Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, there is no denying that whatever Sandfall Interactive does next, whether it is a sequel or a new IP entirely, will be just as successful. No pressure.
