Cyberpunk 2077 appears to be eternally successful, with CD Projekt Red needing to lift nary a finger to see its sales skyrocket and player counts boom. However, while the game has always done well, it has been in recent years and months that Cyberpunk 2077 has truly succeeded, seeing it enter a bold era of new experiences, updates, and more. Evidently, there is still a lot of life left in Cyberpunk 2077, and its players know how best to extract it.

With fans soon able to return to Night City, it is no surprise that Cyberpunk 2077 is setting its sights on an even bolder future, one powered by the devotion of millions of fans. Of course, it remains to be seen just what this bold new era holds, but fans can rest assured that a lot is in store, especially after recent events saw Cyberpunk 2077 once again become one of the most popular single-player video games of all time.

Recently, Cyberpunk 2077's player count changed drastically on Steam in a very short space of time. This wasn't a trivial amount barely worth reporting on, but rather the highest its player count has been since just after the release of Phantom Liberty back in 2023. On June 28, 2026, Steam Charts recorded that Cyberpunk 2077's 24-hour peak player count shot up to 87,205 people. That's a staggering number of people, especially for a single-player experience that typically only averages around 20,000 to 30,000 people daily.

The last time Cyberpunk 2077's player count got this high was, as aforementioned, in December 2023, when it reached 88,875. That, naturally, coincided with deep discounts and the holiday period. It also came just months after Phantom Liberty's launch in September 2023, when Cyberpunk 2077's player count skyrocketed to 273,990. While the recent increase isn't quite that high, it is still a figure worth paying attention to, especially as no new updates or DLC have been released to justify it.

Obviously, Steam player counts only paint a small fraction of the total number of people playing a game, especially one that is available on literally every platform, like Cyberpunk 2077. However, as it is the only publically available data that is tracked daily and based on a heavily used and popular platform, it is a good metric from which to understand the success of a title, such as Cyberpunk 2077.

Instead, this time around, it appears to be as a result of a multitude of factors. Primarily, the game's latest discount has likely helped a little, with the Steam Summer Sale beginning on June 25, 2026, the day before the spike. Cyberpunk 2077 was discounted to just $17.99, which is frankly a steal. However, this also happened to coincide with Cyberpunk 2077's DLC-sized crossover, which saw Wuthering Waves fans enjoy a heartbreaking story featuring characters from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners that has gone on to be universally praised.

Additionally, hype for Edgerunners 2 is at an all-time high with the release of a new trailer; so, fans are likely returning in anticipation of that and its new story. Frankly, even without the player count spike signaling the start of Cyberpunk 2077's new era, all the aforementioned content, in addition to a handful of rumored and teased updates and the upcoming sequel perfectly position it to dominate the charts once more. There's so much love and affection for the Cyberpunk 2077 franchise, and that is going absolutely nowhere anytime soon, especially as it enters yet another bold new era.
